New Summer 07 Animes worth watching.
Re: Rocket Girls
#26
Two eps of this are out subbed now.
My take:
In the not-too-distant future-
Next Sunday, A.D.-
There was a girl named Yukari,
Not too different from you or me.
She dropped by the Solomon Space Agency,
Just another Japanese young tourist.
She was looking for her missing dad,
But the bosses liked her weight,
So they shot her into space.
We'll make her an astronaut,
As good a one as we can (la-la-la).
She will go up in a piece of junk,
And we will make the deadline (la-la-la).
Now keep in mind Yukari can't back out
Of this totally insane deal (la-la-la).
But at least she's not alone in this
After they recruit her friends.
Rocket Girl Roll Call:
Matsuri! (Oneechan!)
Akane! (Oneesama!)
If you're wondering how a high school girl
could ever pilot a spaceship (la la la),
Then repeat to yourself, "It's just anime,
It happens there all the time,
so enjoy... Rocket Girls 3000!"

I'd like to add my vote for Rocket Girls. It's very amusing - simply because it plays a ludicrous premise and some nutty characters with a completely straight face.

Seikichi is an engineer of firework in Edo. One day, a blue hair girl asks him to make a big firework which can reach the moon. Samurai + alien + citizen of Edo. Unpredictable story. Excellent visual. Pleasant atmosphere of the Edo period. The Kiba team got Aikawa Sho as the story editor.
This one's finally being fansubbed

... at first, I was all _what the fuck_?!
Then I was ... huh, boobies?
Then it was ... yanno, they've got something there. It's a damn silly something, but it's something.
Then I figured out what the plot twist would be, and went 'well, D'OH' ... and they _still_ managed to make it damn good and dramatic at episode 8. It makes sense, considering that the first scene of the first ep could only be a glimpse at the future, with Simoun getting paying homage to his Aniki.
Am now watching the rest of what's out and likely will watch this till the end, because ... well, it's _good_ and really really getting going now.
Battleship for the win!

The entire thing is supposed to be a homage to the giant robot genre.
First quarter is the 60s, then the part it's in now is the 70s,
moving into the 90s and a grand finale now.
There are a lot of in jokes and references in the series. Look for the cameos, they're hilarious.

I get that idea, problem being that I've never really been enough of a fan of the genre to accurately identify those.

Heh. That I'll grant you. Not just to mecha anime, either. Just the third ep has references to both JoJo's Bizzare Adventure and Hajime no Ippo. Or am I seeing things?

It's not actually a Summer 07 anime, but I just ran across Soukou no Strain. According to wikipedia the characters and elements of the plot are based on Frances Hodgson Burnett novels. In fact the main character Sara Werec simply has the scrambled last name of the main character in A Little Princess, while two of her school friends are similarly renamed characters from The Secret Garden.
So. Take characters from Burnett's novels, some ideas from the books, and stir in a good dose of mecha science fiction. This could either be really good or really atrocious. Anyone watched enough to pass judgment?

I've seen the first half and really liked it. Unfortunately it's fallen behind in my list of things to watch. It does work as a series despite its weird origin.

I loved Soukou no Strain. Beautiful looking series, great music... and a nice ending too. Just take episode 7 out of the series (except for the last.. 3 minutes) and it would be near perfect a series
On a side note Preview of the next season's animes[Image: faveosig.jpg]

I keep meaning to watch Soukou no Strain, because I am admittedly a Frances Hodgson Burnett fan from way back, but I haven't gotten around to it yet.
Still, I want to see just how warped and twisted they're making it.

I just watched the first two episodes of Rocket Girls.
...
Is it just me or is everyone but Yukari COMPLETELY MAD!
Oh, it's quite funny and fun, but it makes me wonder if Yukari is an accidental traveler from the real world to an odd land where common sense and sanity don't exist and/or don't apply.

As of episode 05 of that same series... no, Matsuri's pretty sensible, just from a weird (and laid-back) cultural matrix. Yukari is the second most sensible member of the cast, so far (her mother is, for lack of English synonyms carrying the same nuance, totemo kakkoi), but she's got a serious overdramatic streak and is still young enough to resort to tantrums.
Being fair, this usually happens because everyone around her is batshit insane, but she's not blameless.
Her father really, really needs a good shot in the mouth, though. Preferably with a baseball bat.

Yes. Apart from Yukari, pretty much everyone in SSA in Rocket Girls is completely nuts. I have my doubts about Yukari's mum as well. The American astronauts in the last few episodes show occasional flashes of sanity, though.

To be even more fair, while having a tantrum because no one is listening to you is childish, having a tantrum because no one is listening to you AND they want to strap you onto a giant pile of explosives built by a pyromaniac is probably perfectly justifiable.--

I wonder why they showed the main engines firing rather than the actual OMS ones?
And they're burning hydrogen with oxygen, yet showing yellow flames rather than blue. Tsk, tsk. ^_^
Of course, the fact that the only complaints I can make about the show's big climactic sequence are these kind of utterly pointless and minimally relevant nitpicks says a lot about both the dramatic quality of the show and its degree of attention to detail.
I think I might've come up with an alternate method of resolving the final crisis, though. If Orpheus has the delta-v to make it to Pluto, it should also have the gas to put itself in a stable low parking orbit... even with Mangosteen tied onto the front with ripped out wiring. True, this'd be an awful desecration to pull on something that costly, but it should be possible to limit the damage to the easily repairable sections, and with the probe not going anywhere, refueling it should be relatively simple.
...overall conclusion: This series rocks like it owns the place. I hope they make a second season. Grab it, watch it, love it.

Lucky Star.
It's bloody hilarious, that's what it is. Parody galore, and Konata ... you know, I think they managed to sum up the characteristics of 'Gamer' damn well in creating her. Her Marimite moments are the funniest thing I've seen in recent anime.

For some reason Animesuki isn't listing it, but Yesy appears to have the first two episodes of Zero no Tsukaima season 2 up.--

Okay, spring rather than summer, but still... Getsumento Heiki Mina is like someone collected bizarre magical girl fanfic and handed it off to a professional studio to animate. According to the secondary font-of-all-knowledge Getsumento Heiki Mina was in fact originally a fake series mentioned in Genshiken (Huh, I must not have read far enough to reach it yet). Well take the absurd situations in Genshiken and crank the dial up to 11 and you start to approach the absurdity of this show.

From Wikipedia:
Quote:
Getsumento Heiki Mina ([...]lit. Lunar Rabbit Weapon Mina) was a fictitious anime which appeared in the television miniseries Densha Otoko.
It does, however, then goes on to talk about how Kujibiki Unbalance similarly came from Genshiken.

In any case, the show is indeed strange and amusing.
