I noticed, shortly after I posted. They won't be missed.

Also, in light of Milkman's question, we may wish to modify the rules so TVT crossposters may need to mark edit reasons stating as much to avoid confusion on ours and so we can properly check. Only would make sense to give some legal breathing space so we can say we did due diligence with records and timestamps along with edit reasons.

Okay, it's getting to the point again with HLIAA14YOG where I think we need to hose him down with ice water. Just what does this edit actually contribute other than "I'm an angry white man upset that people can be racist toward me as opposed to the way things are supposed to be"?

Just so you know, there is a new topic called "Current page image is JAFAAC", on the page for Talk:Fell Off the Back of a Truck. I was pinged on the thread but didn’t get a notification, so figure it may be a technical error. It might also be me setting something wrong, in which case please disregard.

I think this sort of thing belongs in a review or blog post. As analysis, I can think of a least one easy counterpoint, and film isn’t my strongest suit. The film was at least somewhat controversial on release as stated by the page description. If my memory serves me, people had some similar reactions to Robert Downey Junior doing something that is on a surface level similar in Tropic Thunder. (Not a straight inversion, but close enough) This happened just a few years after the publication of White Chicks, showing this was still within the rough window of public acceptability at the time, though either was of course not entirely kosher at the time. I could be off the mark here, but the current example doesn’t pass the sniff test for me either.

I’ll give them credit for adding some more direct context to the example, since before it was long winded way of saying "And How!", but this new example ain’t it in my limited knowledge of the subject matter.

That's a topic that I started.

And this is why I always ping folks who I want to see my posts.

I'm going to be fair here to him, it is a blatant double standard and he's not wrong. That said, he really needs to learn to quit leaking his emotions into his writing, I'll give him a friendly tap on the shoulder to this effect. I also rewrote it to be far less incendiary while still covering the double standard.

He has a point, no matter how distastefully he chose to make that point. Reverse discrimination is still discrimination. And it is a YMMV subpage.

EDIT: Mind you, Canada just had a day of education about reconciliation yesterday, so I'm hyper-focused on the issue at the moment.

In pleasant news, he took my advice to lay off the vitriol. This review has markedly less spittle-flecked anger than his other reviews.

I rejected an edit that was clearly vandalism. (Spamming size tags and gibberish.) What sort of message, if any, is appropriate to leave?

RE: All The Tropes Wiki Project, Part XXX
None. If it's a bot, then let them think they've vandalized us, so they don't try again. If it's a human, don't give them the attention they're seeking.

Should we mention this on one of our style pages? If yes, which page?

Mm. I'd almost say on Rule of Cautious Editing Judgment, but that's not quite the right place. Maybe as its own page, linked off various other advice pages...

What Rob said. If they come back and try again, that's what the "Mark as Spammer" link in Moderation is for -- click that and anything they try to post ever again goes into the bitbucket without us seeing it. (We can turn it off if we make a mistake... but IIRC we've never needed to.)

EDIT: And I see someone has already done that. Meanwhile, is there any way we can extend Moderation to cover the "User talk" namespace? It's obvious our shitposter realized that it's not protected.

Roger that:

On a completely unrelated note, I’m not really sure how If I had a handle on my interaction here on the thread for Th0mas9991. It’s a bit of an odd situation, and I don’t want to scare them off or be rude: my gut feeling from reviewing their edits is that they’re telling the truth.

I pinged everyone for their input, but given the recent issues with notifications, I figured it was good to mention it here just in case.

Caution is never inadvisable. If in doubt, give them a chance to explain themselves. If they refuse, keep the edits rejected. We'd rather be assured of no legal issues than be careless.

About five minutes ago the wiki started throwing 500 errors. And then it shifted gears to our recent friend, "ArgumentCountError".

It's someone else's turn to start a ticket on Maniphest.

Edit: And it's not just ATT. KanriKyara is also throwing 500s. I suspect the entire farm is borked right now.

I was just coming to ask whether anyone else was getting blank pages instead of content... (The freebie wiki's affected, too. EDIT: So is Meta.)

Just a bit of a tech explanation in simple language on this for future reference. What this means is that when they updated the database tables of all the wikis on the service for the newest version of MediaWiki, either an extension was not configured properly (thus the data did not convert to the new version of the database tables) or settings required for the new MediaWiki core were not configured properly, resulting in corrupt tables that could not be loaded during the upgrade conversion. Either way, it's good they decided to be prudent and make sure this upgraded properly, our data could have undergone serious corruption had they not made sure the upgrade was smooth and without error. Even if it worked with minor error that did not prevent upgrade, it could have caused data corruption that would be dangerous long-term.

TL;DR: Our tech staff backend guys were competent and prudent.

Minor task done: all Creative Commons licence templates are now consistently named with all-upper-case names.

I believe we wanted to do this before implementing the extension/module/widget that forces licences to be provided when files are uploaded.

RE: All The Tropes Wiki Project, Part XXX
I've started a little project in my sandbox (can be seen at the top at present) concerning a rewrite of the Nazi Germany page. There are many tropes used in fictional depictions of Nazi Germany, and I wanted to list them on the page while describing how well they applied to actual reality for the historical regime. TV Tropes has cut all tropes on Useful Notes pages for some reason, but for the benefit of understanding how reality and fiction differ, I was going to rewrite the page to show how those tropes associated with them worked in actual reality. Such is noted on individual trope pages of that nature already. I also wanted to make more pages for some of the leading figures, many of which have become templates for fictional characters in many other media.

Sorry to necro this, but whenever I try to reply, I get hung up over potentially implying the wrong thing regarding what is and isn’t acceptable. (I understand it, but I’m failing to articulate it in a way that is both accurate and friendly.)

I just want to convey that their edits are OK to import, if attributed to themselves properly, containing no work of others who did not explicitly consent to their work being used under a different license, that there isn’t a need to rewrite it to appear different (But there is to use mediawiki syntax/different trope names), and any improvements over earlier versions are obviously welcome.

They requested a copy of their old edits, Is it ok to PM them that?

I've been a bit disoriented recently - I apologize for my hang up here.
