All The Tropes Wiki Project, Part XXX
RE: All The Tropes Wiki Project, Part XXX
One small thing regarding ilovecakes: They often put the italics marks inside the wikilink instead of outside it (breaking the wikilink). I was planning on leaving a message about it, but I’ve had a hard time feeling confident in not scaring them off over something like that, since otherwise they tend to follow the style guide. I was planning on leaving a message like this:

“Hello,

Thank you for your contributions! I just wanted to let you know in your edit to ___ that you included work italics inside the link like so [[''___'']]. The correct formatting is ''[[___]]'', which keeps the link working.

Happy editing!
"

I’m sorry I didn’t bring this up sooner. I should have been more forward.

Oh, no problem. Even though they've been promoted, just keep banging at them until they stop doing it.

Okay, now I'm confused. Just as soon as we promote "Ilovecakes", a new user called "Ilovecake" is created and starts posting?

Did a little crossreferencing, and it appears to be the same user. The edits look fine, but it appears to be an alt account, albeit a harmless one. Not sure why it was created, but we should probably ask.

And point out that the alt account doesn't have the privileges that the older account has.

They said they forgot their password.

There’s some sort of password reset, right?

If they provided a working email address, yes. https://allthetropes.org/wiki/Special:PasswordReset

So... they didn't provide a working address originally, but they did provide one for the replacement account and confirmed that it is a replacement account.

Should we promote the new account to automoderated immediately? There are plenty of this troper's edits waiting in the moderation queue.

They should request Miraheze staff to merge the accounts.

Not this again.

Quote:Database locked
The database is currently locked to new entries and other modifications, probably for routine database maintenance, after which it will be back to normal.
The system administrator who locked it offered this explanation: Maintenance is in progress. Please try again in a few minutes.

Getting this error on login.miraheze.org, so this is farm-wide:
Quote:[459acccbdb78decbbd310249] 2024-11-15 18:51:34: Fatal exception of type "Wikimedia\Rdbms\DBReadOnlyError"

Does Miraheze really have so many international users that 1:30pm ET Friday is the least-impacting time they could find for maintenance?

Ran into that when I was growing through the moderation log.

Odd time for maintenance. I try to avoid doing anything that big on Fridays if it can be reasonably done earlier in the week or postponed to Monday.

Looks like it’s back up.

And then for another half-hour it kept disappearing for just a few moments at a time, long enough to throw an error while trying to open or save a page, and back again on a retry.

And since then I've found myself logged out of ATT on every browser and machine I use. And when it isn't throwing a 500 "page isn't working, allthetropes.org is currently unable to handle this request." error when I try to log back in (after deleting my cookies), I either get "invalid returnUrlToken, Return to the previous page" or I get the pink-boxed "something hinky happened, try logging in again" error.

Just what the hell is going on now?

EDIT: And it's still throwing the "unable to handle this request" error, when it's not displaying a page without any styling.

I've had to re-login to every wiki I edit at Miraheze.

Something's wrong with the centralized login service.

EDIT: T12886 already existed; I've added a report saying essentially what I said here.

You forgot to ping the troper who you tempbanned.

Looking through the talk page, everybody has consistently forgotten to ping the troper in question. We as a group need to do better than that.

As for bans, I'd prefer to leave that ability in the hands of admins only. Admins and mods are supposed to work together, after all - there's no big inconvenience to leaving the keys to ultimate measure in as few hands as possible.

They’ve finally responded.

For some reason the Main Page's talk page -- and only this page that I've found so far -- is throwing "This wiki is temporarily unavailable" errors when you try to look at it.

I reproduced that error right before it was fixed. The cause apparently was one of the admins mucking about.

I just noticed the notice on thehello, and I think I’ve been guilty of much the same. I often replace images with commons versions, but have neglected to consult the community. I will correct this going forward.

I'd like input from the other admins, but I'd argue that's a case of it being acceptable if an appropriate Commons image exists. It saves time and hassle and provides pre-vetted images with proper licenses and quality assurance.

There is that. Plus you're an admin, MC -- we offered you the post because we trusted your judgment, and with it comes the power to make this kind of unilateral decision/change. In contrast, Thehello is a regular wiki editor, who should be following the proper procedure.

On another subject entirely... MC, you approved this edit, but half the links in it were redlinked -- one to a trope we don't have, and one for bad capitalization. Given the non-existent trope was the only entry on the page, this probably should have been rejected with a note of advice to the contributor to make sure that any tropes they want to list exist on this site. I've gone in and potholed the trope link to a sufficiently similar trope that we do have, so there's no need to do anything now. Just... keep it in mind for the future.

If the replacement image is the same picture but of higher resolution, that isn't an issue.

If the earlier image is missing, again that isn't an issue.
