Not mandatory. There's a good hotel within walking distance of the Northeast Corridor train station in New Brunswick NJ that would probably cost far less, even factoring the cost of a train ticket into NYC in. There are more some miles from the station, and they even have shuttles, as I recall. (And failing that, I'm pointing you at stuff near us, which means a free ride if all else fails. We're in no condition to host people right now, but we can certainly act as a rallying point or simple transport, as needed.)

A little poking tells me I can do economy to J. Random NY Airport (it doesn't seem to matter which) in mid- or late-August for about $250 one-way (and the same back). ... which, y'know, I'll keep in mind? But unless I win the lottery or get a huge promotion between now and whenever this were to happen, I simply can't afford it regardless of how much cheaper it is than first-class.
