  Spontaneous Incitement of Revolt
Posted by: ECSNorway - 02-04-2006, 12:05 AM - Forum: The Game Everyone Loves To Play - Replies (1)

Or, How To Start A Revolution Without Really Trying.
United 93, by Echo's Children
From pocket, purse and seatback, the telephones arise
Victims of a hijack, calling home to say goodbyes
Learn it's no coincidence; the networks all have shown
Lives and buildings pulverized in fire and falling stone.
Exactly what took place in there, there's none alive can say
We only know the outcomes of decisions made that day
We bow our heads in silence, honoring the free,
Remembering the heroes of United 93.
Someone must have realized; they haven't got a qualm
To kill our friends and neighbors, they'll make this plane a bomb
We've got to take the cabin back; if that much can't be nailed
God knows how many people will be dead because we failed.
The bastards are outnumbered, and all they've got are knives.
We haven't much alternative; surrender won't save lives
Our families, our children; their grief we cannot spare
The fields ahead are empty; let us end the struggle there.
The rest of us are thinking how best to manage strife
A blanket makes a blindfold, a pillow slows a knife;
The next poor chumps who try it, will find we've paid the fee
For lessons from the heros of United 93.--
"Use of unnecessary violence in the apprehension of General Zod has been approved."

The above links to an interesting set of MIDI-converted piano rolls. Down at the bottom of the page you'll find this:
VOICE -
Hark the roar of canon's angry thunder over no-man's land today.
As before, we'll tear their ranks asunder as we plunge into the fray.
All the world is watching while we battle for the cause of truth and right.
Strike for home and native land! Great Jehovah gives command
Charge! Charge! Charge!
Come on boys, charge ... and we shall conquer the Hun;
Ere day is done ...the battle shall be won;
The foe shall reel ... before our steel ... and tyranny shall bend the knee
to libertee-ee.
Neath our own flag ... so poudly floating on high, we'll show the world ...
that we are ready to die
with ringing shout and cheer that knows no fear we'll fight for those ... we
love.
My flag that floats proud..ly from yon lof-ty spire,
has kin-dled in all our hearts true free-doms de-sire.
My coun-try for e-ev-er and ev-er shall be
a re-fuge and ha--ven un fettered and free.
I love you America! Oh! Thy sacren name ...
thru love and devo-o-tion my life you can claim.
My coun-try for-ev-er my flag gives to me
that priceless in-her-i-tence sweet lib-er-ty.

  Possible metasong...
Posted by: Feinan - 02-03-2006, 12:23 PM - Forum: The Game Everyone Loves To Play - Replies (2)

I've recently been listening to a large amount of music during the day, with the acquisition of a new audio player. Came across this in the playlist, and it got me to thinking. I know you wanted more metasongs and other-person power songs, Bob, and this looks like a good possibility.
The Touch
Stan Bush
You got the touch
You got the power
After all is said and done
You've never walked, you've never run,
You're a winner
You got the moves, you know the streets
Break the rules, take the heat
You're nobody's fool
You're at your best when when the goin' gets rough
You've been put to the test, but it's never enough
You got the touch
You got the power
When all hell's breakin' loose
You'll be riding the eye of the storm
You got the heart
You got the motion
You know that when things get too tough
You got the touch
You never bend, you never break
You seem to know just what it takes
You're a fighter
It's in the blood, it's in the will
It's in the mighty hands of steel
When you're standin' your ground
And you never get hit when your back's to the wall
Gonna fight to the end and you're takin' it all
You got the touch
You got the power
When all hell's breakin' loose
You'll be riding the eye of the storm
You got the heart
You got the motion
You know that when things get too tough
You got the touch
You're fightin' fire with fire
You know you got the touch
You're at your best when when the road gets rough
You've been put to the test, but it's never enough
You got the touch
You got the power
You got the touch
You got the power

I see several possibilities for this one. First, it might just grant the target some range of powers. Given the lyrics, it could be a standard brick powerset (possibly including a metal transformation as well) or you might have some flame powers given the "fightin' fire with fire" line. However, I could also see this as something similar to 'I'll Play For You.' If played first, the next song played can be transferred to a target instead of affecting Doug, as long as it's one of his offensive powerset songs.

  Sailor Moon Question

Can someone please answer this for me?
In several fanfics I've seen references to palaces or castles established for each senshi on their planet or one of its moons. Is this canon or fanon?
Thanks.

After many fruitless searches, I FINALLY found a copy of the techno verison of The Phantom of the Opera that was used in the Magnetic Rose AMV - it was (incorrectly) attributed to Nightwish, but wo cares - it rocks almighty hard regardless of the metadata. As for what it might do as a power song... some form of mind control, or possibly illusion projection if Doug saw the AMV as the first exposure to this version. It's simply unthinkable that it could not be a power song.

  Crowd control and mental balance...
Posted by: Feinan - 02-02-2006, 08:33 AM - Forum: The Game Everyone Loves To Play - Replies (7)

I was considering a few songs today, for crowd control purposes. Both should have similar effects: calming panic, which can be VERY useful when the civilians start to lose it.
Don't Worry, Be Happy
Bobby McFerrin
Here's a little song I wrote
You might want to sing it note-for-note
Don't worry, be happy
In every life we have some trouble
But when you worry, you make it doubleDon't worry, be happy Don't worry, be happy now
Ooo-oo-hoo-hoo-oo hoo-hoo-oo-oo-oo-oo-ooo Don't worry
Woo-oo-woo-oo-woo-oo-ooo Be happy
Woo-oo-oo-oo-ooo Don't worry, be happy
Ooo-oo-hoo-hoo-oo hoo-hoo-oo-oo-oo-oo-ooo Don't worry
Woo-oo-woo-oo-oo-oo-ooo Be happy
Woo-oo-woo-oo-ooo Don't worry, be happy
Ain't got no place to lay your head
Somebody came and took your bed
Don't worry, be happy
The landlord say your rent is late
He may have to litigate
Don't worry, (ha-ha ha-ha ha-ha) be happy (look at me, I'm happy)
Ooo-oo-hoo-hoo-oo oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-ooo Don't worry
Oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-ooo Be happy
Oo-oo-oo-oo-ooo (Here, I'll give you my phone number. When you're
worried, call me. I'll make you happy.)
Ooo-oo-hoo-hoo-oo oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-ooo Don't worry
Woo-oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-oo Be happy
Woo-oo-oo-oo-ooo
Ain't got no cash, ain't got no style
Ain't got no gal to make you smile
But don't worry, be happy
'Cause when you're worried, your face will frown
And that will bring everybody down
So don't worry, be happy Don't worry, be happy now
Ooo-oo-hoo-oo-oo oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-ooo Don't worry
Oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-ooo Be happy
Woo-oo-oo-oo-ooo Don't worry, be happy
Ooo-oo-oo-oo-oo oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-ooo Don't worry
Woo-oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-oo Be happy
Woo-oo-oo-oo-ooo Don't worry, be happy
Now there, is this song I wrote
I hope you learned it note-for-note, like good little children
Don't worry, be happy
A-listen to a-what I say
In your life, expect some trouble
When you worry you make it double
Don't worry, be happy, be happy now
Ooo-oo-hoo-hoo-oo oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-ooo Don't worry
Oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-ooo Be happy
Oo-oo-oo-oo-ooo Don't worry, be happy
Ooo-oo-hoo-oo-oo oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-ooo Don't worry
Woo-oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-ooo Be happy
Woo-oo-oo-oo-ooo Don't worry, be happy
Ooo-oo-hoo-oo-oo oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-ooo Don't worry, don't worry
Oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-ooo Don't do it, be happy
Oo-oo-oo-oo-ooo Put a smile on your face
Don't bring everybody down like
this
Ooo-oo-hoo-hoo-oo oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-ooo Don't worry
Ooo-oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-oo It will soon pass, whatever it
is
Ooo-oo-oo-oo-ooo Don't worry, be happy
(fading...)
Ooo-oo-hoo-hoo-oo oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-ooo I'm not worried
Ooo-oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-oo I'm happy
Ooo-oo-oo-oo-ooo

and...
Hakuna Matata
Music by Elton John, lyrics by Tim Rice
Hakuna Matata!
What a wonderful phrase
Hakuna Matata!
Ain't no passing craze
It means no worries
For the rest of your days
It's our problem-free philosophy
Hakuna Matata!
Why, when he was a young warthog...
When I was a young wart hoooog!
Very nice.
Thanks!
He found his aroma lacked a certain appeal
He could clear the savannah after every meal
I'm a sensitive soul, though I seem thick-skinned
And it hurt that my friends never stood downwind
And oh, the shame
(He was ashamed!)
Thoughta changin' my name
(Oh, what's in a name?)
And I got downhearted
(How did you feel?)
Ev'rytime that I...
Pumbaa! Not in front of the kids!
Oh... sorry.
Hakuna Matata!
What a wonderful phrase
Hakuna Matata!
Ain't no passing craze
It means no worries
For the rest of your days
Yeah, sing it, kid!
It's our problem-free
philosophy...
Hakuna Matata!
Hakuna matata
[Repeats]
It means no worries
For the rest of your days.
It's our problem-free philosophy
Hakuna Matata
[Repeats]
Both should produce calmness in an area effect.
I was also considering another mental effect song, this one for balancing one's mind. It should help center a person, stopping emotional control attacks. It might also be used as a mental healing song, especially for damage done from an outside source. If used in the Buffyverse, this might well have cured/helped the people who were driven mad by Glorificus.
Crane Dance
Julia Ecklar
'In all things, there must be balance.'
So my teacher says to me.
'Living life's the point of things,
But balance is the key.
There is power in the balance
That allows a crane to stand.
My son, you must learn balance
To assist your empty hands.
'For balance guides the butterflies,
And lets the seasons turn.
The greatness inside any man
Is the balance that he learns.'
In my life there's been no balance-
I was taught to lose or cheat.
How am I to balance
With no ground beneath my feet?
How will learning to be hurt and hate
Help me to have a chance?
While a crane may stand by balance,
You will never see one dance.
For balance is a fairy tale
I never will achieve.
The naive may find balance,
But the bitter can't believe.
Still I try to catch my balance
Where the sand hills meet the sea.
Do I need another's faith,
Or my own faith in me?
With my head above the water
I can sometimes see the land.
Could it be I must see balance
Before I can understand
That balance is as balance does,
Between the left and right?
Balance means you understand
The crane when it's in flight.
Almost lost, can I find balance
In the guise of what I fear?
Could it be a test of fire
Must make the balance clear?
This fire only balances
The cold I've known so long.
From this balancing, I will emerge
A single human strong.
For balance tempers light and dark,
And guides these empty hands.
Like the crane, whose one leg bears his all,
With balance, I can stand.

So - any thoughts?

  Infuriating Fanfic
Posted by: M Fnord - 01-31-2006, 10:38 AM - Forum: Other People's Fanfiction - Replies (61)

Pulled this choice quote from the latest rec thread:

Quote:
Oddly enough, I found brainchild's works to be the most infuriating pieces of fiction I've ever had the misfortune to read.
I was heartily disgusted with them by the second chapter, and forced my way to the 5th or 6th in most cases before giving up in a fit of loathing.
It's not that they're poorly written, they just wanted to make me smack him/her, if that makes any sense.
I know what you mean. I've seen fanfic that's caused that kind of visceral reaction. F'r instance, take Skysaber's Eva adventure; I was rolling with it most of the way, but when I got to the part where Jared claims kinship with one of the lost tribes of Israel, I damn near put my fist through the screen. My WSoD snapped back so hard it took out an eye, and maybe a couple of people standing behind me.
Anybody else have that kind of reaction to a story that was written well (not the usual poor-spelling-poor-grammar horrors that end up as MST3K fodder) but just manage to rub you utterly the wrong way?---
